Art on Location: Materials Lab is a course that explores the sculptural potential of both established and innovative materials. Beginning with a series of exercises that delve into the physical and chemical properties of material on a micro level, the class will weekly broaden its scope to consider the function and meaning of material systems on a macro scale. Part alchemy, part research, part hands-on material exploration, the class will look at both the physical properties of materials and their interconnected meaning (social, political, personal, scientific, sculptural, historical, etc.). We will discuss the role of personal and institutional material libraries, and will work with the SAIC’s SURPLUS program, Rebuilding Exchange, the Resource Center’s Creative Reuse Warehouse and/or Dorchester Projects to locally engage in these systems of material transfer and exchange. Weekly assignments will be geared towards individual sculptural investigations while in-class workshops, off-campus trips, visiting artist presentations and readings will allow us to build upon personal research to develop a collective body of material knowledge.
